2 Ways children develop language skills

There are two ways in which little ones learn and develop language: Analytical Language Processing and Gestalt Language Processing. Both are normal way to acquire language and both valid. The reason why this matters is because the supports, models, and strategies used are different for each type of language processing. Analytical Language Processing is the type most commonly known to others. Some little ones can be dual language processors where they acquire language skills in both ways. What type of language learner your child happens to be usually is not an concern unless they are delayed with their speech and language or have other issues affecting their language skill development. One interesting fact is that research shows that most Autistic children are Gestalt Language Processors (GLP’s) and if not supported properly can get stuck in the single word level not combining words or being able to self generate speech to communicate their own thoughts, needs, wants and feelings. Working with my GLP clients is one of my favorite things to do and I love coaching and educating parents on how to support their child’s language development in the home environment!
