Your child’s first session: What to expect.

Depending on what your child is being evaluated for, their first session with us can look very much like described above. I like to speak with you prior to find out your concerns and your child’s interests. For any child, our first priority is connection. We like to use their interests during our sessions to make it fun, allow your child to lead and feel comfortable. If your child is seeing us for a language delay then the session will be child led, play based activities to for us to observe, take a spontaneous language sample, if applicable, and go through a developmental checklist or questionnaire with parents.

For children who come to us for speech sound errors or reduced intelligibility (not being able to understand them), we have them label pictures so we can assess how they make particular sounds in words to enable us to see what sounds they are able to produce and which ones they need help with that are age appropriate. We are able to evaluate toddlers who can not label pictures yet so do not worry if that is the case! We also like to observe them during play and get an idea of how they communicate spontaneously.

For older children having difficulty with academics, we have standardized assessments that allow us to look at specific areas of language development (for example, linguistic concepts, grammar, sentence comprehension, formulating sentences, inferencing, and vocabulary to name a few) that may be affecting their performance in school.
